About Our Stud
The family's interest in Welsh Mountain Ponies goes back before the first Stud Book. There are stud cards in the family archives dated 1890 advertising Young Express Lion, bred by John Reynolds, foaled in 1884, by Telegraph Lion out of Mountain Maid whose prize cards date back to 1897.
The first registered pony appears in Volume II of the Stud Book - Express Lion II, Stud Book no.42. John Reynolds’s son E J Reynolds of 2 Blanche Street, Dowlais joined the WPCS in 1919 being actively involved in its affairs. David, his son joined in 1952 securing the Blanche prefix, having been a member since 1948 as part of E J Reynolds and Sons.
When David married Lorna in 1965 they jointly used her Springbourne prefix, giving their daughter Cerys, the Blanche prefix.
David & Lorna initially bred Section A, B & D & showed ponies for clients which included the Sec. A stallion Treharne Tomboy winner of the In-hand Championship at the HOYS on two consecutive occasions & the Sec. B stallion Solway Master Bronze - Champion at the RWAS.
Cerys and her husband Stephen now run the Stud concentrating on producing top class Welsh Mountain Ponies.
The Ponies of today all descend from four mares: Cwmgarn Gwen, Belvoir Columbine, Dundon Elf & Brynaiu Misty Morn.
All the mares in the Stud now carry several generations of homebred breeding with new blood lines being introduced through stallions which are occasionally leased or purchased.
